Nampula, Nampula, Mozambique

The orphanage is located in Nampula City, the capital of Nampula Province in northern Mozambique.  Although Nampula is the third largest city in Mozambique, it is comparable to a small town and most neighborhoods besides the very center of town are like condensed villages with unpaved roads, no running water, and houses made from mud or concrete.  Nampula is located in the heart of the Macua Homeland and almost everyone living here speaks Macua before learning Portuguese.  May – September is the most pleasant time of year because the weather is dry, warm and mild with cooler nights.  During the rainy season (November – March) the city is the most beautiful because of the lush, tropical, green vegetation; but the heat can be extreme and heavy rains destroy houses and bring malaria.  From the orphanage it takes 15 minutes to drive to the center of Nampula where there are government buildings, hotels, restaurants, public markets, a grocery store, an internet café, a hospital, a museum, and the airport.  If you drive only 5 minutes in the opposite direction you will enter the bush.  Local markets, churches, and the Bamboo Hotel are all within 2 miles of the orphanage.
